Our cameras film at the incredible frame rate of 1000 frames per second, which is FORTY times slower than regular cameras. For specialist applications we can also film up to 20,000 frames per second in smaller formats. Until recently, the industry standard was the Phantom camera, these cameras are complex, cumbersome to use and highly expensive, only affordable with Hollywood style budgets. We use Chronos cameras by the Canadian company Krontech. These cameras are more portable and do exactly the same thing.

Recording at 1000 frames per second is a challenging task for any camera. The Chronos records 1000 Cinema DNG frames every second, which is astounding. This is possible as Krontech have developed an internal buffer which is able to capture all of this information reliably. After each shot is taken, we review the shot, then choose the section of footage we like, then export this to an SSD which is attached to the camera.

This is not a quick process. It takes time and patience. We calculate that each shot takes around 15 minutes to complete. Filming at these frame rates requires a lot more light than usual. When filming outside, bright sunlight is optimal but we have tested these cameras under all lighting conditions and if there is broken cloud, this is also fine, as long as there is some sunlight. For indoor shoots, we have ultra bright flicker free lighting.

The camera sensor works extremely hard to film at these frame rates and the quality of lenses we use makes all the difference. With this in mind, we only use Carl Zeiss Cine lenses,
